Are we eating more healthily?
The Food Standards Agency is an independent Government department set up protect the public's health in relation to food. The agency recently published its 7th survey into consumer attitudes and behaviours. The research shows that people are slowly adopting new attitudes to healthy eating. The key findings are:
- More people are aware that they should be eating at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day compared to those interviewed in 2000. Click here to find out what is a portion.
- The amount of salt, fat and sugar in foods continue to be the main concerns of consumers. Find out about foods high in fats and sugars.
- More and more people are looking at nutritional labels to check the fat and salt content of the food they buy.
- Almost half of people say they are trying to increase their intake of fruit, two fifths are trying to increase vegetables and almost a quarter are trying to increase salad vegetables.
- When questioned about snacking, consumers admitted they snacked on a range of foods including fresh fruit, biscuits, cakes, crisps and savoury snacks. Find out more about healthy snacking.
- Over half of all the people interviewed said they would like more information about the food they eat. They said they still find it difficult to identify a healthy product from its label.
